The Lighthouse Meaning

The Speaker: Steve Pemberton

The first time I ever got to see Mr. Pemberton speak was when I had the chance to attend a conference meeting for the county schools. To make a long story short I had spent a short time thinking I could become a teacher assistant to have my schedule better align with my child’s. Excuse my bad case of huge mom guilt here, but most parents can relate. After that experience I appreciate ALL the teaching staff and always will! However, I’m still a firm believer that time spent in another profession (even a short time) is never wasted because you always learn something from it.

I feel like getting to hear Mr. Pemberton speak was maybe what I needed out of that experience! I highly recommend you attend one of his speaking sessions. Some people can open a point of view that you never knew existed and this man made that impact on me in just that short amount of time. He spoke about his hardships growing up and how the book he wrote “The Lighthouse Effect” has to do with the people in his life that helped to guide him during difficult times.  Even if you don’t work in teaching, I believe everyone can learn something from his experience to take into their own profession.

Many people in the legal profession come across clients who are struggling with many things, and it becomes stressful to help these clients at times. Attorneys and all legal staff are people too and trying to get the job done. Hearing the experiences from Mr. Pemberton helped me remember why I’m so passionate about helping people as a paralegal and being a supportive team member to my clients (attorneys).

Honestly, when I thought of a name for my business this book came to the forefront in my mind! To be a mentor for someone, to guide them and help them find their way during their time of darkness or stress means a lot and that is what attorneys do for their clients. I get to be a part of that process! I’ve been very lucky to have worked with attorneys that are passionate about what they do and reach out to help their clients in the best way possible.

Give the book a read or see one of Mr. Pemberton's speeches and I promise you won’t go away empty handed. Focus on your mission as to why you got into this type of career!
